Fielding PPG Questions as a Buyer: Logos, Ethanol Fuel Additives, Methanol, and Acetone Safety

A purchasing administrator shares how to handle common PPG-related requests—logo downloads and verification, the Pittsburgh Penguins' PPG Paints Arena, fuel additives for ethanol, the CAS number for methanol, and what to do if acetone gets in your eye.

I'm an office administrator for a mid-sized manufacturing company in the Pittsburgh area. I manage about $500,000 in annual purchasing across eight vendors—paints, industrial coatings, solvents, and specialty chemicals. That means I field a steady stream of PPG-related questions, both from our own team and from external contacts.

Some questions are easy. Some aren't. But the ones that come up again and again follow patterns. Here's how I've learned to sort them.

Scenarios I Keep Seeing

Most PPG-related questions fall into one of four buckets:

  • Brand/logo verification or file requests
  • Product selection decisions, especially fuel additives
  • Chemical specification lookups, like CAS numbers
  • Safety and exposure questions

The right answer depends heavily on your situation. There's no single smart way to handle all of them. But once you identify which bucket you're in, the path forward gets clear.

Brand and Logo Requests

People ask me about the PPG logo more often than you'd think. Sometimes it's marketing needing a file for a banner or a presentation. Sometimes it's a customer checking whether a product is genuine. Those are different requests with different workflows.

For file requests: PPG doesn't have one universal public download link that works for every context. If you're creating marketing materials, the right move is to go through PPG's brand resources or media contact page—not Google Images. We once had a vendor pull a low-res logo off the internet for a sign. It looked terrible, and marketing was not happy (unfortunately, I was the one who'd approved the vendor).

For genuineness checks: if someone wants to confirm that a can of paint is actually PPG, the logo alone isn't enough. Look at the product codes and batch numbers. PPG's labeling is clear, and their customer service contact form on the official site can verify products. I used it twice in 2024, and they responded within a day. I don't have hard data on how many lookalike products float around, but based on my experience, it's worth the 5 minutes to check.

But PPG's industrial coatings, sealants, and specialty chemicals are a huge part of their business. My advice: don't treat all logo questions as one question. Are you verifying a product, or are you getting a file? The workflow and the right point of contact are completely different.

Fuel Additives for Ethanol

If you're looking for a fuel additive for ethanol, the first consideration is whether your engine actually needs one. Ethanol in gasoline attracts moisture, which is why fuel additives exist. But not every engine or use case benefits.

Most people think an additive fixes ethanol damage. It doesn't—it stabilizes the fuel before damage starts. Different problem. So I sort these requests by how the equipment is used.

Daily drivers and frequent use. If a vehicle burns through a tank every week or two, you probably don't need an ethanol-specific additive. Modern engines and fuel systems handle E10 fine. Buying fuel from a busy station and not letting it sit is more important than any bottle of additive.

Seasonal and stored equipment. This is where an ethanol-compatible fuel stabilizer earns its keep. Boats, snowblowers, standby generators, lawn mowers—anything that sits for months. We maintain two standby generators at our facility, and one sat with stale fuel for nearly a year. The repair bill was $400. A $10 bottle of stabilizer would have prevented it (ugh).

Collector vehicles and older engines. If you're storing a car for months, a fuel stabilizer is worth it. But also check whether the engine is compatible with ethanol at all. Some older seals degrade with ethanol content, and no additive changes the materials in your fuel system. The additive stabilizes the fuel; it doesn't rebuild your fuel lines.

If you're a buyer like me, the most efficient approach is to ask how the equipment is stored. Long-term storage? Buy the stabilizer. Regular use? Save the budget.

Methanol Orders and the CAS Number Question

When someone asks for the CAS number for methanol, they might be doing a quick internet search, or they might be an engineer trying to order the right chemical for a process. Those are very different conversations.

The CAS number for methanol is 67-56-1. But anyone who has actually purchased methanol for industrial use knows the CAS number is just the starting point. You also need the purity grade—technical grade, HPLC grade, or reagent grade—plus the right safety data sheet (SDS) for your jurisdiction, and the correct shipping classification because methanol is flammable.

I learned this the hard way in my first purchasing year. I ordered "methanol" without specifying the grade, and the lab rejected it because it wasn't the purity they needed. Cost us $280 and a week of delay. Classic rookie mistake. Now I ask for the application before I ask for the CAS number.

If you're procuring methanol for a lab, you need the analytical grade and a certificate of analysis. If you're using it as a solvent in a manufacturing process, industrial grade may be acceptable, but you'll still need the SDS documentation to stay compliant under OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200). I wish I had tracked how often SDS gaps turn into audit findings—what I can say anecdotally is that it's more common than people admit.

Acetone in the Eye: What Happens and What to Do

The question I sometimes get from nervous employees is, "What happens if you get acetone in your eye?" It's a fair question, and the answer matters more than most people realize.

Acetone in the eye causes immediate stinging, tearing, and redness. In more serious cases, it can cause corneal irritation or damage. It won't dissolve your eyeball—that's a myth—but it's painful and requires prompt action.

Under OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200), employers must maintain safety data sheets for hazardous chemicals and make them accessible to employees. That's not just paperwork—it's the reference you need in the first minutes of an incident.

If it happens, the immediate steps are:

  1. Flush the eye with clean, lukewarm water for at least 15 minutes
  2. Hold the eyelid open while rinsing
  3. Remove contact lenses if present
  4. Seek medical attention if pain or redness persists

Here's the buyer's perspective: those supplies should be visible and accessible before an accident happens. Eyewash stations aren't optional under OSHA. When I took over purchasing in 2020, we didn't have a formal SDS management process. It showed when a technician had a small splash and we couldn't find the SDS quickly—the binder was buried in a supply closet. We were lucky it was minor. We fixed the process the same week.

Also note: skin exposure and eye exposure are different protocols. Skin needs soap and water; eyes need immediate flushing. Confusing the two can make things worse.

How to Tell Which Scenario You're In

If you're not sure which category your question falls into, run it through these quick checks:

  • Are you asking for a logo file, or trying to verify a product's authenticity? If the first, you need brand resources. If the second, you need customer service and batch numbers.
  • Is the equipment in question used year-round or stored seasonally? Seasonal equipment generally needs an ethanol-compatible fuel stabilizer. Daily drivers generally don't.
  • Are you ordering methanol for lab analysis or for industrial production? Lab orders need purity specs and a certificate of analysis. Production orders need correct grades, SDS compliance, and proper shipping.
  • Is this about prevention or response to an exposure? If acetone just got in someone's eye, stop reading and flush for 15 minutes. Prevention planning comes after care.

The common thread is context. I'd rather spend five minutes asking clarifying questions than undo a mistake later. An informed buyer makes better decisions—and I'd argue an informed supplier does too.
