Solvent-based permanent adhesives are engineered for long-term endurance. They resist moisture, heat, aging, and rough handling, which is why they appear on chemical drums, outdoor equipment, automotive parts, and anything that has to keep its label for a decade.
It's tempting to think permanent is the higher-quality choice. The stronger-the-better rule ignores the end-of-life requirement. If the container is going to be washed and reused, permanent adhesive is not a quality feature—it's a contamination risk.
One more thing: water soluble doesn't automatically mean compostable or biodegradable. It means the adhesive loses its bond in wet conditions. Read the supplier's technical data sheet before assuming it's the sustainable choice.
I dodged a bullet on this exact issue a few years ago. We were about to approve 50,000 labels with a standard permanent adhesive because the supplier's sample looked clean. You'll find them on trim, doors, metal railings, and other surfaces that need a hard, glossy, moisture-resistant finish.
Water-based paints use water as the carrier. They dry faster, have lower VOCs, and clean up with soap and water. For most commercial interior walls, they're the default—and for good reason.
But the question what paints are oil based deserves a follow-up: what are you really trying to get from the oil-based paint? If it's that smooth, level finish on a door or a piece of trim, a water-based alkyd can often deliver the same appearance with much lower odor and faster recoat times. The old rule oil for trim, water for walls still works, but it's not the only option.
Primer selection often matters more than paint type. If you're not sure whether a surface was painted with oil-based paint, sand a small area and wipe it with solvent: if the rag picks up pigment, you're dealing with oil.

- Choose water soluble adhesive labels when containers will be washed, returned, or recycled together with their labels. Choose permanent solvent-based adhesives when the label has to survive years outdoors or harsh storage.
- Choose water-based paint for most walls and ceilings. Choose oil-based paint—or a water-based alkyd if you want the same look with less odor—for trim, doors, and metal that need a hard film.
And the bigger point: the best spec is the one someone actually verifies. The specification didn't include a moisture test, and the installer never asked.
