Sealants, adhesives, powder coatings, specialty chemicals—if your project spans multiple surface types, consolidating with one manufacturer often means one warranty, one support line, and one set of documentation. That's a bigger deal than it sounds.

In September 2022, I approved a "budget-friendly" ceramic coating because the per-gallon price was about 40% below the spec'd product. It failed within a year—thermal cycling caused microcracking. Nobody caught it until we inspected a test panel. The recoating process cost about $1,500 in materials, labor, and downtime.

So that $200 in savings? It turned into a $1,500 problem. The cheapest option on paper ended up being the most expensive option in reality. Total cost of ownership (i.e., the math that actually matters) includes removal, surface prep, reapplication, and lost production time. The initial quote is the smallest number in that equation.

People think expensive coatings are expensive because of the brand name. Actually, it's usually the other way around: suppliers who deliver consistent field performance can charge more because they've proven they're worth it. The product earns the price tag—the price tag doesn't create the quality.

Ask any ceramic coating supplier for field performance data, not just lab results. Lab panels don't face moisture, UV, and thermal cycling simultaneously. I've been burned by a beautiful spec sheet that didn't survive real-world conditions (surprise, surprise).

Scenario D: Liquid Rubber Waterproof Sealant for Concrete

Liquid rubber waterproof sealant for concrete looks like a no-brainer. And honestly, the material can work great. But I've watched contractors (and myself) skip a critical step: surface prep.

If they can't produce it, that's a red flag, not a selling point.

Scenario E: The "Who Makes Paraquat?" Verification Lesson

Let me end with the question that started my whole checklist: who makes paraquat?

A client asked me this a few years ago, and I assumed a large chemical company—maybe PPG, maybe someone else—just made "everything." It turned out paraquat is manufactured by agricultural chemical companies like Syngenta (the Gramoxone brand) and a handful of others under strict EPA regulation.   • Check the question itself. If you're asking "who makes X" before you've even identified a use case, that's Scenario E. Verify first, buy later.
