I approve material purchases for a 26-person commercial coatings contractor. I do not work for PPG, but I have managed a coating materials budget of roughly $190,000 a year for six years. Most of that spend goes to PPG products. I keep every quote in the same cost tracker because I learned early that material selection mistakes show up on invoices twice: once for the wrong product and again for the redo.

The honest answer is that it depends on the product and the plant. PPG is a global manufacturer. Some of the product lines I buy are made in the United States, and some are not. When someone searches for made in USA PPG coating, the results show different brands, different product chemistries, and different places of manufacture.
Here is how I handle the question:
- Ask the distributor for the country of origin in writing before I make a large order.
- Ask whether the exact tinting base and finish are made in the same plant. A product can carry a made in USA label while the colorant or resin component comes from a global supply chain.
- If the job has government requirements, do not assume made in USA is enough. Many public projects ask for compliance with Buy American or a specific domestic content clause, and those rules are stricter than a label claim.
Made in USA is not a quality spec. It tells you where the product was made, not whether it is the right product for the exposure, DFT, and surface prep. I care more about the product data sheet than about which continent the factory is on.
How much epoxy resin do I need per square foot?
You cannot calculate that from square footage alone. You need two numbers from the product data sheet: the volume solids percentage and the required dry film thickness, or DFT.
The basic formula is:
Square feet per gallon = (1,604 x volume solids) / dry film thickness in mils
Why 1,604? One gallon covers 1,604 square feet at one mil of dry film if the material were 100 percent solids by volume. Most epoxy coatings are not 100 percent solids, so you multiply by the actual volume solids percentage.
Example: a 60 percent volume-solids epoxy specified at 8 mils DFT covers about 120 square feet per gallon.
1,604 x 0.60 / 8 = 120.3
If the floor is 400 square feet, you need 400 / 120 = 3.33 gallons before waste. Add at least 15 percent for porous concrete, rough substrates, roller loss, and disposal of leftover mixed material. On an old or damaged concrete floor, I use 20 percent.
The most common estimating mistake is comparing prices by the gallon without looking at DFT and volume solids. A cheaper gallon can cost more if it deposits only a thin film. I also keep primer and topcoat as separate line items. If someone tells me epoxy resin per square foot without giving me the volume solids and DFT, I ask for the product data sheet before I approve the purchase.
Is universal solvent safe to use with PPG coatings?
The short answer is usually no. Universal solvent is a catchy name, but there is no single solvent that works with every resin system. Water is often called the universal solvent in chemistry class, yet it won't dissolve cured epoxy or polyurethane. Xylene and acetone are strong solvents, but they attack some plastics and can ruin a coating if used as a thinner.
I learned this the expensive way. We bought a generic solvent because the price was lower than the product-specific thinner. We used it on a two-component polyurethane job, and the coating started bubbling the next day as trapped solvent tried to migrate out. That became a prep and recoat job that cost about $1,100 more than the correct thinner would have cost.
PPG product data sheets and safety data sheets include a cleanup section and a recommended reducer or thinner section. Some generic cans say universal solvent, and some labels say solvent universal to make the product sound broad. Neither tells me whether it matches the coating's resin chemistry.
My rule is simple: follow the product data sheet. If it says use xylene, use xylene. If it says use a specific reducer, use that reducer. I do not substitute solvents to save a few dollars, because the invoice arrives after the redo.

The word ceramic is not a product name. A ceramic coating for a vehicle clear coat is different from a ceramic-modified topcoat for concrete, a high-temperature industrial coating, or a ceramic paint additive sold for building maintenance.

That is the way I think about expedite fees now. They are insurance against a specific deadline risk. If no deadline exists, I use standard lead time. If the deadline is contractual, the rush charge becomes part of the project cost before I approve the quote.
A hurry is not a reason to skip the technical questions. It is a reason to ask the distributor whether the product is actually in stock, who owns the freight risk, and what the guaranteed delivery date is. Paying for speed is only smart when you are also paying for certainty.
What should every PPG coating quote include?
If a coating quote does not include the following, I treat it as incomplete:
- Exact product name and product code.
- Volume solids percentage from the product data sheet.
- Recommended DFT for the specified surface.
- Coverage rate in square feet per gallon and the estimated loss factor.
- Minimum and maximum recoat times.
- Whether the price includes primer, intermediate coat, topcoat, or a single product.
My first-year mistake was accepting a low quote for an epoxy floor paint when the project actually required a heavy-duty epoxy floor coating. The paint was not designed to reach the specified film thickness. The coating failed, and the redo cost far more than the correct product would have cost on the first pass. That experience changed how I write purchase orders and how I compare quotes.
If a supplier will not put coverage and DFT numbers in writing, that cost risk lands on you. Make them put it in writing, then check the quote against the product data sheet. That one habit has saved me more money than any discount I have ever negotiated.
