PPG Coatings, Sealants, and Sta-Flo: Answers to the Questions I Actually Get Asked

A quality and brand compliance manager answers six recurring questions about PPG coatings, American coating suppliers, Sta-Flo liquid starch, metering mixing sealants, and whether grout can replace tile adhesive.

These are the questions that keep landing in my inbox — from procurement teams, from new hires on my own team, and occasionally from someone who found my contact through a forum thread. I grouped them because they keep repeating, and because the answers people find online are frequently wrong or outdated.

Quick context on me: I'm a quality and brand compliance manager at a mid-sized construction and industrial supply company. I review every coating, sealant, and adhesive spec sheet before it reaches customers — roughly 200+ items a year. In 2024, I rejected just under 12% of first deliveries due to spec or labeling issues. So this is coming from the receiving end, not the selling end.

What actually makes a supplier an "American PPG coating provider"?

This one trips people up more than it should. PPG is the manufacturer. An "American PPG coating provider" is a distributor or applicator — the middle layer between the plant and you. Those are two different things, and conflating them causes problems.

Here's something vendors won't tell you: "Made in USA" labeling on coatings follows FTC rules, but those rules allow for certain imported raw materials. So a coating can legitimately carry a US origin label while containing pigments or resins sourced overseas. That's not fraudulent. It's just how the chemistry works.

What you actually want to verify:

First, is the supplier an authorized PPG distributor? Check the PPG website directly, not the supplier's own claim. Second, ask for the batch origin. Third — and this is the one I care about most — ask for the technical data sheet with the revision date. If it's more than 18 months old, someone is being sloppy.

I don't lose sleep over where the resin was refined. I lose sleep over whether the spec sheet matches the drum.

Where do I find PPG paints events today?

Honestly, this is the question where I see the most bad information floating around. Third-party event aggregator sites scrape and repost PPG event listings constantly, and by the time you find them, half the dates are wrong.

Go to the source. PPG publishes its own events through official channels — the corporate site, their coating-specific divisions, and their distributor network bulletins. If you're in automotive refinish, that's one channel. If you're in architectural, it's another. There's no single feed, which is annoying but manageable.

If you've ever shown up to a training session that had been canceled three weeks earlier, you know that sinking feeling. It happened to me in 2023 — drove four hours for a refinish workshop that had been rescheduled. Now I call the distributor the day before. Every time.

Is Sta-Flo liquid starch actually a PPG product?

Yes. And this is the one that surprises people every time.

PPG's portfolio extends well past industrial coatings. The consumer segment includes household products, and Sta-Flo liquid starch is one of them. It's been in the PPG family since the company they acquired in the 1990s got folded into the chemistry portfolio. Most people who use it at home have no idea it sits inside a Fortune 500 coatings giant.

I've never fully understood why PPG kept a laundry product in its strategic portfolio while it simultaneously divested other non-core businesses. My best guess is that the manufacturing footprint overlaps — liquid starch is, chemically speaking, not that far from certain aqueous coating formulations. Same equipment. Same logistics. If someone on the inside has a better answer, I'd genuinely like to hear it.

The practical takeaway: if you're sourcing Sta-Flo as a standalone product, you're dealing with a consumer channel, not the industrial one. Different contracts, different minimums. Don't call your coatings rep about it.

Do I need metering mixing equipment for sealants?

Depends on the sealant. This is not a universal answer, and anyone who gives you one is guessing.

One-component sealants cure from moisture in the air. They come ready to apply. No metering, no mixing, done. If you're buying those, skip the equipment entirely.

Two-component sealants — and this is where it gets expensive — require the correct ratio of base to catalyst. Metering mixing equipment exists precisely because humans are bad at ratios at scale. When I reviewed a batch of 8,000 sealant units in Q2 2024, roughly 200 of them showed partial cure failure. Root cause: a manually mixed two-component batch where the ratio was off by what the vendor estimated was "maybe 3%." The whole lot had to be reprocessed at the vendor's cost.

So: one-component, no. Two-component, at volume, yes. The equipment pays for itself the first time it prevents a bad batch.

Can I use grout as tile adhesive?

No. And I want to be direct about why, because the internet is full of people claiming they've done it and it "worked fine."

Grout fills the joints between tiles. Adhesive bonds the tile to the substrate. These are structurally different jobs, and the products are formulated for them. Grout doesn't have the tensile bond strength to hold a tile in place vertically. It also isn't designed to accommodate the substrate movement that a proper thinset or mastic handles.

Can you physically press grout behind a tile and have it stick for a while? Sure. Will it hold for a year? Maybe. Will it fail when the substrate moves, or when moisture gets behind it, or when thermal cycling kicks in? Almost certainly.

If you're ever mid-project and realize you're out of adhesive, the right answer is to stop and get more adhesive. The wrong answer is to substitute grout and hope. One of those mistakes cost a contractor I know a full redo on 400 square feet. Roughly $6,000 in labor plus materials, all to save a $40 trip.

Should one supplier handle everything — coatings, sealants, and adhesives?

I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises everything.

The vendor who told me "this isn't our strength — here's who does it better" earned my trust for everything else they did. That conversation was worth more than any discount they could have offered. It told me they know their line.

"One-stop shop" sounds efficient. In practice, it usually means one thing is excellent and everything else is acceptable. If your paint performance is critical and your sealant is a secondary concern, fine — route both through the paint specialist and accept the sealant compromise. If both matter, split the contracts.

Three things I'd insist on before consolidating: verified spec sheets for every product line, a single point of accountability for quality claims, and written confirmation of which items the supplier actually manufactures versus resells. In that order.

Bottom line: concentration of purchasing is a cost play. Concentration of quality risk is something else entirely. Don't confuse the two.
