I manage coatings and facility supplies for a 40-person industrial maintenance company. Over the last six years, I've tracked every purchase order in a cost spreadsheet—not because I'm obsessive, but because two low-ball quotes in 2019 turned into invoices I still remember. I do not care about the price per gallon until I've seen the total cost per square foot. So when I compare coating options, I compare total cost, not sticker price.

This article is a comparison between two ways to handle an industrial coating project: working through a PPG Platinum Distributor with an industrial coating service, or buying direct from the manufacturer and managing the application yourself. If you've ever walked past the PPG Paints Arena entrances in Pittsburgh during winter, you've seen what happens to concrete and steel when de-icing salts and heavy traffic keep testing the coating. That's the kind of environment where a buying decision shows up later, in maintenance budgets.

The framework: four dimensions, one question

Over the past 6 years, the biggest cost overruns I've audited usually came from something other than the product price. People think the cheapest coating causes budget overruns. Actually, overruns come from unclear specs, late material choices, and rework caused by bad adhesion or the wrong removal method. So I compare four dimensions: sourcing, service scope, spec accuracy, and rework.

When I sit down with a supplier, I open my TCO spreadsheet. It has columns for base price, freight, setup, site visit fees, testing, and expected rework. The last column is the one that separates budgets from surprises. I built that spreadsheet after getting burned on hidden fees twice.

I'm not saying the cheapest gallon never works. More often than not, it's the rest of the job that adds cost. The question is whether the people involved are set up to catch problems before they become line items.

Dimension 1: PPG Platinum Distributor vs. direct order

Let's talk about the source. A direct PPG order has a clean quote. You get the product, you pay the freight, and you schedule your own application. If you know exactly what you need, that can be the shortest path.

The catch shows up when something isn't obvious. A PPG Platinum Distributor, to be fair, is still a middleman. But in my experience, a good one earns the margin by translating the product data sheet into the job site. Last year I compared quotes for a floor patch and a fuel-resistant sealant. The direct quote was about 14% cheaper. The spreadsheet said buy direct. My gut said the distributor's rep had already asked two questions the online form didn't: what fuel is actually stored there, and what's the substrate temperature range. I went with my gut. The rep's recommendation avoided a sealant that would likely have softened within a year.

I'm not saying every distributor quote is perfect. Some are just order takers with a better logo. The platinum designation is a screening tool, not a guarantee. But those two questions changed the total cost calculation by more than the price difference on the quote.

Dimension 2: What an industrial coating service actually includes

An industrial coating service is more than a truck with spray equipment. It's the part where someone is accountable for surface prep, environmental conditions, and film thickness. When you buy direct, you become that someone. If your crews are experienced, fine. If not, the service contract through a distributor is usually worth the money.

Here's a moment from a structural steel project in Q2 2024. We had an adhesion failure on a beam. The coating supplier's remote support told us to reclean and recoat. The PPG Platinum Distributor's local rep came out with a pull-off adhesion tester (ASTM D4541) and found the blasting crew's air compressor was putting moisture into the line. No phone support would have caught that. To be honest, I second-guessed the extra cost for two weeks after approving the quote. I didn't relax until the first adhesion test came back above our spec. The rep cost more per hour, but saved us from recoating the entire structure.

Documentation is part of this dimension too. A good industrial coating service logs dry film thickness readings and surface prep conditions. That record is what lets you prove the job was done right. Without it, you're guessing—and a warranty discussion without records is not much of a discussion.

Dimension 3: Finding the best fuel resistant sealant is a test, not a label

Of all the questions I get, 'What's the best fuel resistant sealant?' is near the top. My answer is usually: the best one for your site is the one tested against the actual fuel. Fuel resistance is not one rating. Diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, ethanol blends, and biodiesel all stress sealants differently. A sealant that handles gasoline splash might not hold up to continuous immersion in biodiesel.

For a diesel maintenance shop, we ended up using a two-part polyurethane sealant with a hydrocarbon immersion claim on its data sheet. But we still made a test panel and left a cup of the shop's diesel on it for 30 days. Honesty moment: I'm not sure why some data sheets list 'fuel resistant' without specifying the fuel. My best guess is that the standard lab tests use reference fuels that don't exactly match field conditions. That's why a good distributor asks what you're storing before recommending a product.

Application matters as much as chemistry. PPG's product data sheets list a recommended film thickness range, and that number is a spec, not a suggestion. A fuel resistant sealant applied at 4 mils instead of 12 mils will fail even if it's the right product. Check the wet film thickness, especially around edges and penetrations. That's a cheap step, but I've seen it skipped on more than one urgent job.

Dimension 4: How do you remove impact adhesive? Check before you scrape

This is the dimension where prevention over cure pays for itself. A question we get from new maintenance staff is 'how do you remove impact adhesive?' Impact adhesive is contact cement. It doesn't dissolve in water. You need a solvent—citrus-based adhesive remover or acetone—to soften the bond, then scrape with a plastic scraper. On concrete, a stiff brush helps. On painted metal, test first because acetone can strip the coating. On plastics, avoid acetone entirely.

If the surface can't handle solvent, mechanical removal is the fallback. Use the gentlest method that actually works: a carbide scraper at a low angle, not a grinder with a coarse disc. And after removal, wipe the surface with a solvent before applying new coating. Traces of adhesive or release agent will show up as fish eyes.

But the real cost isn't the removal method. It's the rework when someone skips the test. In one job order, I watched a contractor spend three hours grinding contact cement off a steel door frame. The grinding embedded adhesive into the surface and smeared it. We stopped the job, bought a $25 solvent sample, and finished removal in 40 minutes. The grinding had already caused $900 in recoating work. That's the pattern I see over and over: five minutes of checking would have prevented five days of correction.

Scenario-based call: distributor or direct?

If you have an in-house painter who knows coating specs, and your project is a simple repaint with one substrate, buy direct. The invoice is smaller, and you won't need the service layer.

If the project involves multiple substrates, fuel exposure, public foot traffic, or old coatings you cannot identify, the PPG Platinum Distributor route is usually the smarter cost. You're not buying paint. You're buying someone to catch the problem before it becomes a line item. In my opinion, the distributor route pays for itself on any project with unknown substrates or chemical exposure.

Personally, I'd rather pay for a local rep than for a rework. The direct route is kind of a gamble. I'm not gonna pretend that direct ordering doesn't make sense for some teams, because it does. But every time I pass the PPG Paints Arena entrances—when the steel is still clean and the concrete isn't peeling—I can't tell who did the work. I can tell that somebody did the checking. That's the part I'm willing to pay for.
