An emergency supply specialist explains why rush coating orders fail and how a PPG platinum distributor prevents costly mistakes—from hot melt coatings to chemical safety.

April 2024, 4:12 on a Tuesday. A facilities manager was on the phone because a coating job had failed in a high-traffic area and the floor had to be back in service by Friday. Normal turnaround for the system he wanted: five business days. After 30 seconds of questions, I told him we could ship that day. After 10 more minutes of questions, I almost retracted the promise.

That sounds like a contradiction. It isn’t. In my role coordinating emergency chemical deliveries for a PPG Platinum Distributor, I’ve handled 200+ rush jobs in the past decade—same-week deliveries for event venues, overnight shipments of specialty raw materials, and one memorable caustic soda emergency at 2 a.m. The pattern never changes. The problem isn’t the deadline. The problem is what people do because of the deadline.

It looks like a speed problem

When a customer calls about a rush order, the first question is usually “What’s your fastest option?” Speed feels like the only variable. But fast delivery still fails if the product, substrate, and application method don’t match. It fails louder when nobody reads the chemistry before pouring it.

A distributor is not a distributor

The second reason rush orders fail is quieter: people buy from a distributor instead of buying from a distributor who knows the material. There’s a real difference, and “PPG Platinum Distributor” isn’t just a fancy title.

PPG grants platinum status to distributors who meet higher standards for inventory, training, and technical support. In an emergency, that matters. When a product is on allocation, platinum distributors get priority. When a customer needs a compatibility answer at 6 p.m. on a Friday, we can call PPG’s technical team instead of guessing. When a spec sheet says one thing and the job site says another, we have people who can catch the conflict before it costs the customer a week of downtime.

Honestly, I’m not sure why so many buyers ignore distributor status until something goes wrong. My best guess is that they assume the product is the only variable. In reality, the distributor is the one who stocks it, stores it, and decides what not to sell you.

Last month, a personal care manufacturer called with a coating failure in a sensitive production area. The process engineer knew what she wanted, but she was in a hurry and skipped the details. I said “we’ll get the material there by Friday,” and the customer heard “your problems are over.” The product arrived on time, but the crew had skipped surface prep because they assumed the coating would handle it. It didn’t. That miscommunication cost them a failed inspection and a second week of downtime. Same words, different meanings.

What a rushed job actually costs

Rush fees are usually the smallest cost in a failed project. I’ve paid $800 in extra freight to save a $12,000 job—that’s the good version. The bad version is paying $800 in extra freight and then paying $40,000 to redo the work anyway.

A few years back, a food-processing client lost a big contract because a floor coating failed. They had chosen a lower-cost product and compressed the cure schedule to meet a deadline. The coating couldn’t handle moisture from the cleaning process. It blistered within weeks. The contractor had to strip the entire floor, and the line sat idle for nine days. The product wasn’t the problem. The decision process was.

And I haven’t always followed my own advice. Looking back, I should have verified the substrate before one job instead of assuming it was the same as the last time. I skipped the final check because nothing looked different. The concrete had been sealed, the coating couldn’t bond, and $35,000 worth of work peeled like a sunburn. Not the product’s fault. Not the application crew’s fault. Mine—because I chose speed over verification.

So what actually works

If speed isn’t the real problem, what is? It’s information—the specs you confirm, the data sheet you read, and the distributor you choose. That’s why an informed customer asks better questions and gets faster answers. It’s also why we spend time on customer education even when the order is small.

Before you call for a rush coating delivery, run through this:

  • Confirm the substrate and prep. Is it sealed, painted, damp, or contaminated? If you don’t know, the fastest coating won’t save you.
  • Read the product data sheet and SDS. You should be able to state the application method, recoat window, and any safety requirements before you ask for delivery.
  • Ask about the distributor’s relationship with PPG. A PPG Platinum Distributor has a different level of stock, training, and technical backup than a general paint seller.

We do the same when it comes to “green” claims. If a customer asks for an environmentally friendly coating, we don’t hand them a slogan. Yes, sometimes you need it by Friday. That part is manageable. What isn’t manageable is pretending chemistry will wait for your schedule. It won’t. Plan for the details, and the delivery can be as fast as you need it to be.
