1. Is PPG coating actually made in America?
Some of it is, yes. But PPG being an American company doesn't automatically make every product in the catalog made in America. PPG is headquartered in Pittsburgh and operates coating plants across the US. It also manufactures in many other countries, and origin depends on the specific product line and the plant that produced your batch.
The "American brand equals American made" assumption comes from an era when the supply chain was mostly domestic. That's not how manufacturing works now. Ingredients and finished coatings cross borders all the time, so origin is a batch-level fact, not a brand-level claim. The FTC's current "Made in USA" standard also requires that all or virtually all of a product be processed in the US.
I made this mistake in my first year, 2019. A client needed a made-in-USA PPG coating for a federal job. I assumed every PPG product would qualify. It didn't—12 drums arrived with "Manufactured in Mexico" on the certificate of analysis, and the client rejected the lot. That error cost $760 in redo plus a two-week delay.
Now I check the SDS and the certificate of analysis before I quote, not after. If a spec mentions made in America, I verify it on the paperwork, not the brochure.

It opened in 2010 as Consol Energy Center, and PPG bought the naming rights in 2016. So when someone searches "PPG Paints seating chart," they're looking for hockey seats and concert views, not a chart of PPG's product lines.
I wasted an hour on this in 2021. A client asked for "the PPG Paints seating chart," and I went looking through PPG's site for a product portfolio chart. No. He meant the arena, and he wanted to bring a customer to a Penguins game. I do not recommend repeating that mistake.
There's a B2B angle worth knowing: PPG uses the arena for customer entertainment. If a contact mentions "the PPG suite," they mean hockey tickets, not coatings. That's a business development conversation.
3. Where do I find the SDS for a PPG product containing toluene?
Get it from the official source. PPG publishes SDS documents on its website and customer portal, and your distributor should provide the current revision with each order. Search the exact product name plus "SDS," or ask your PPG rep to email the latest revision. That's what I do now—I don't trust the shared folder anymore.
Toluene (C7H8, or C6H5CH3 if you're reading it structurally) shows up in solvent-based coatings, epoxy hardeners, and thinners. Under OSHA's HazCom 2012 standard, fully phased in by June 2015, SDS documents use the 16-section GHS format. Toluene gets attention for good reasons: it's highly flammable (H225), causes skin irritation (H315), and is classified as a suspected reproductive hazard (H361d). It's also a VOC, which affects how you can store and apply it.
My September 2022 mistake: I processed an order for 12 drums of a toluene-containing high-build epoxy and pulled an SDS from a shared folder that was two years out of date. The customer's EHS team rejected the paperwork at the dock. We had to return the drums, correct the documentation, and reship—$450 in freight and three days of delay, all because someone downloaded the wrong version.
Honestly, I'm not sure why SDS revisions get buried so deep in distributor portals. My best guess is that shipping systems get more development attention than document access. Regardless—use the official source, check the revision date, and attach the current PDF to every order.
4. Which black epoxy paint should I pick?
Start with the surface and the environment, not the color. Black epoxy paint is a two-component system: resin plus hardener. And "black" tells you almost nothing about whether the coating will survive hot tire traffic, chemical drips, or routine washdowns.
For steel in a fabrication shop, you want a high-build, chemical-resistant epoxy—the kind PPG formulates for industrial maintenance. For concrete, moisture vapor matters more than the topcoat. If the slab has high moisture, a moisture-tolerant primer is worth more than an expensive finish.
Here's my 40-drum lesson. We ordered the cheapest black epoxy we could find because the budget was tight. It was a general-purpose decorative system, not a chemical-resistant one. Eight months into service, the floor in an acid-exposure area was blistering. The redo cost $1,500 in materials plus five days of downtime. Suddenly the "cheap" quote wasn't cheap at all.
Now the rule is: compare the technical data sheet, confirm chemical resistance, and test a small area before committing to the full order.
5. What is acetone's chemical formula—and why does a buyer care?
Acetone is C3H6O, commonly written CH3COCH3 or (CH3)2CO. The IUPAC name is propan-2-one, though you'll still see "propanone" and "dimethyl ketone" in older documents. It's the simplest ketone and it's everywhere in coating shops as a cleaner and degreaser.
Why care? Because "solvent" is not one thing, and acetone and toluene get confused constantly. Acetone mixes with water and evaporates fast. Toluene doesn't mix with water, evaporates slower, and is aromatic. They behave differently in a coating system, which is why the product technical data sheet calls out a specific thinner.
In 2020, I mixed acetone and toluene 1:1, thinking it would create a "stronger thinner." What it actually did was soften a spray gun. The TDS on the coating explicitly said not to thin with acetone. I just hadn't read that section. That's on me.
Practical approach: use acetone for cleanup unless the manufacturer says otherwise. For thinning, use exactly what the data sheet calls out. If acetone isn't listed, that's your answer.
6. Should I just pick the cheapest quote?
My honest take after six years of ordering is this: the lowest quote has come back to cost us more in maybe 60% of cases where we chased it. At least, that's been my experience with industrial coating orders. It's not because expensive paint is magic. It's because the low number rarely includes the total cost.
The hidden line items are technical support, batch-to-batch consistency, SDS accuracy, delivery reliability, and a rep who answers the phone when the coating fails. Time is a cost, too—a five-day delay burns money faster than most discounts save.
I do not mean ignore price. I mean compare the total: product, shipping, application labor, and risk. When a quote comes in significantly lower than the rest, ask why. Sometimes the answer is honest—better logistics, bigger stock. Sometimes the formulation is meant for a different job, and nobody said so. That hour spent reading the SDS before signing is the cheapest insurance this industry offers.
